About

STOP Haringey Council taking away Lord Morrison Hall from Afro International.

The Centre was erected by public subscription supplemented by funds provided be the Tottenham Corporation to commemorate the life long effort of the late Alderman, the Rt. Honourable Lord Morrison of Tottenham PCDLIP. A former Mayor of this borough and Labour MP for the Tottenham North Division from 1922 – 1931 and 1935 – 1945 in the interest of elderly people, particularly for those of this borough, and to carry out the desire of the large number of subscribers and of the borough council for the provision of a permanent centre in the borough for the use of elderly people. The centre was officially opened on 21st September 1957 by Sir Frederick Messer CBE MP. From 1980 to 1990, Afro International Community Arts Workshop programme was successfully carried out in the Community Centre, Lord Morrison Hall. In the later part of 1990, due to financial restraint imposed by Central Government rate capping policy, Haringey Council transferred management responsibility of the Community Centre to Afro International Theatre Productions. The financial deficit of the Centre to the council has been reversed since Afro International assumed full management. In twenty-five years, Haringey Council has profited financially, in the region of about a quarter of a million pounds (£250,000). This is an astonishing, extraordinary achievement deriving from the voluntary sector effort.
