A Vintage country pub in the heart of York. Cosy, roaring open fires in the winter, and a beautiful Orchard to enjoy in the summer.

The Dormouse is built on the site of the old Clifton hospital, originally known as the North and East Riding Pauper Hospital when it opened in 1847. These days, we look after visitors and locals rather than patients and instead of a hospital, we offer friendly hospitality and delicious food and drink, creating the ideal setting in which to relax and unwind. A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.
